oh, hi monday

As I sip on some cold brewed iced coffee that i was experimenting with yesterday [too weak with water but perfect with milk; back to the drawing board...], I am slowly waking up. Maybe. Mondays are hard for everyone, even baristas...

We had SUCH a great time Friday night at our very first art showing/opening reception. Collin Rowland brought quite the crowd with him, and his pieces look great on the walls. Thank you to everyone who came to see his opening, and I am so excited, not only for the rest of this month, but the ones to come and seeing what sort of undiscovered talents lie in the City of Florence! The response so far has been fantastic, and I am pleased to report that we are currently booked until July - not bad for a new shop. ;)

Per usual, artist booking q+a can be directed to the attention of jill - windmillcoffee[at]gmail[dot]com.

In the pipeline for the week... I am focusing on perfecting cold brewed coffee and we begin to BAKE! that's right. We bought a purty little KitchenAid stand mixer and we're gonna start crankin' out some giant fresh baked muffins, pound cakes, and other tasty bits! Stop on in mornings all this week for some hot and fresh breakfast to go with that good coffee you're ordering. We're also working on a little menu to start working in brunch on the weekends, so stay tuned for that, because it's going to be awesome. Aside from that, I plan to complete and hang menu boards, finalize a carry out menu [by popular demand!], continue to work on getting the drive through up and running [yay!], and nail down a point of sale system that does everything I need it to. Big week. Wish us luck!

the christening of the walls

I am sooo very excited to be having our very first art opening at Windmill coffee this evening!

Tonight, we kick off April with our first monthly resident artist, Collin Rowland. Collin is the mastermind behind Living Studios Creative, and will have his work on display here at the 'Mill for the entirety of April. His opening reception is tonight, from 6-9pm and his work will be for sale. Of course, there will be delicious coffees and teas available for purchase as well. ;) We were so excited yesterday during the installation of this show, and can't wait to show it off with Collin tonight! You can see Collin's work all month here at the store, or by visiting www.livingstudioscreative.com - here's a little sneak peek though!

hope to see you tonight at Windmill Coffee!!

If you would like more info on having your own show at Windmill Coffee, please write to windmillcoffee@gmail.com to schedule a showing.

it's a sign!

No really! We have a sign on our building now!
it looks like this:

It's the little victories. At least you all can find us now, right? :)

Aside from the mountain we had to get over by not having a sign, we are feeling so good about the way we are moving forward. We've had great feedback about the coffee, the chai, the space, our sandwiches, etc, so I couldn't be more pleased, and we're starting to expand our menus even more. I'm happy to announce the other day, I purchased a KitchenAid industrial stand mixer online, so as soon as we receive it, we will start baking muffins and other tasty treats from scratch!

I'm still trying to find the solution to my lack of blended coffees issue, but I'm working hard at coming up with a recipe that works and isn't full of junky sweet carb fatty grossness. I am convinced that if folks really knew what was in those blendyccinos, they would have nightmares. Bad ones. It's my mission to find the right mix of tasty and not evil if I'm going to do blended drinks. In the interim, we do have fruit smoothies, made with fruit and lowfat yogurt.

This week, we've added some new faces, are steadily working on both our actual menus inside, as well as a carry out version, and will have our first resident monthly artist hanging his work! His name is Collin Rowland and his series of photography/mixed media opens on April Fools Day for the entire month of April, and we are pretty excited about it. Join us Friday 4/1 for his opening, if you're in the area! Also, if you are an artists and would like to schedule a month to show/sell your work here, email us at windmillcoffee[at]gmail[dot]com

back to making some tasty coffee!

today is day five.

today is the 5th day of having open doors. in the past 5 days, we've 'learned' some baristas, worked on our sandwich recipes and drink-making skills, tinkered with some future offerings, perfected our house-made chai [thank you, taste testers!] and have been inundated with visits from well-wishers, old friends and have made some new ones along the way. we're still a work in progress, but we are so happy with the progress we've made so far. signs and a funky credit card situation had us a little down, but the positive response from the Florence community and our nearby Cincinnati friends thus far has kept our heads high. it'll all work out, one step at a time.

in the interim, i'd just like to say thanks for such a warm welcome. we are fully committed to bringing you delicious, carefully hand-crafted drinks and food offerings in the freshest, most locally sourced ways we possibly can. we don't believe in fake ingredients we can't pronounce. we wouldn't feed you things we wouldn't give our own families. we believe that our small business should support other small businesses, as well as the community it serves. be watching for evidence of this as we move forward, ok? we want you to know that we are here for the long haul, providing a place to work, relax and have a delicious cup of coffee.

about us, since you don't really know us yet, eh?
  • we proudly feature La Terza coffee beans, locally roasted in Cincinnati, Ohio.
  • we offer Hario v60 pour over brewing [you must try this, it will change the way you think about coffee!]
  • we feature a large selection of house-made sandwiches fresh daily, baked to order.
  • we make our own chai, and will even serve it 'dirty' if you want. :)
  • we feature sweet things and breakfasty goodies like donuts and bagels from local favorite Emerson's Bakery. we also have yogurt parfaits that we make every morning, and hot oatmeal for here or to go.
things we're working on:
  • getting our signs installed! [thanks for your patience and taking the time to look for us!]
  • FULLY integrating our merchant account with our point of sale [we can take credit cards now though! yay!]
  • making a smoothie menu
  • making a blended coffee drink base that isn't terrible for you
  • continuing perfecting our sandwich selection and drink-making skills
  • creating recipes for soups, muffins and scones, prepared fresh in-house
thanks for tuning in, and stay tuned for even more good stuff that's coming.

best,
jill + the windmill crew
